The Stevens Raiders went into Friday’s Greater Dakota Conference duals in Sioux Falls undefeated on the season and the focus was on No. 2-ranked Sioux Falls Roosevelt. The Raiders knocked off last year’s state runner-up in four games, but were also handed their first loss of the season at the hands of the Washington Warriors in three games.
Behind 10 kills and eight blocks from Kacey Herrmann the Raiders topped the Rough Riders 25-23, 25-22, 27-29, 25-17. Anna Sykora also contributed 21 assists.
However, in the first match of the day, No. 1-ranked Stevens fell 25-13, 25-17, 25-21 to Washington. Ashlyn Hazard had 13 kills to lead the Warriors and Emma Hanson chipped in 10. Hannah Nieman had 33 assists and four aces. Margaret McCloud paced the Raiders with nine kills and Herrmann had 12 blocks.
The Central Cobblers are still seeking their first win of the 2011 season after dropping both matches at the GDC on Friday.
It took Roosevelt four games to take down the Cobblers, 25-8, 25-22, 15-25, 25-22. Aubrey Rypkema pounded out 12 kills and Jordan Oostra had 26 digs for Central.
Washington finished the day 2-0 after handling Central in three sets 25-13, 25-17, 25-21.
Central (0-5) and the Raiders (4-1) continue the GDC today against Sioux Falls O’Gorman and the defending state champs Sioux Falls Lincoln.
