Complete and total control.
That was the story Tuesday night as the No. 1-ranked Stevens Raiders dominated every aspect of the match and won in three quick sets over the Spearfish Spartans, 25-8, 25-12 and 25-10.
“We executed well, especially on with passing, which we needed to improve on from our previous matches,” said Raiders head coach Jonel Geske. “We have to refine some things with Central coming up next week, but overall I liked what I saw tonight.”
For much of the night Spearfish struggled to even set up their offense and return the ball back over the net. The Raiders finished the match with 12 aces- led by Kacey Herrmann and Tessa Loberg who had four apiece- and when it wasn’t an ace, it seemed it was an unforced error that undid the young Spartan club.
The experienced Raiders were simply too powerful. The first five points of the match, the Spartans failed to return serves. After Spearfish finally managed to score a couple points, the Raiders forced a side out. From there, Loberg came to the service line and helped the Raiders rattle off eight straight points to go up 13-2. The tone for the night was set.
A lot of our girls have started jump serving, and were hitting the ball hard,” said Geske. “Those are hard to return.”
Margaret McCloud and Herrmann dominated in the front row as usual, pounding out eight and nine kills, respectively.
Stevens improved to 8-1 overall and won’t be back in action until Sept. 29 when they face Central.
RC Central tops Sturgis in four games
The Central Cobblers overcame a lackluster opening set to pick up their second win of the season Tuesday night.
The Cobblers lost 25-11 in the opening game, but bounced back and won the next three, 26-24, 25-18 and 25-21 in Sturgis.
Brittany Anderson had a team-high nine kills and Tessa Gorsuch contributed 23 digs.
Lea Meirose gave the Cobblers trouble all night with a game-high 19 kills.
Central improves to 2-7 and will face Stevens on Sept. 29..
