Megan Anderson made only her second ever start at striker for the Stevens Raiders Tuesday night against the Central Cobblers. All she’s done in those two starts is score six goals. Normally a standout midfielder Anderson made the switch to striker last week against Pierre. In her first game she scored a hat trick. On Tuesday she followed suite netting another three goals as the Raiders pounded the Cobblers, 7-0.
Anderson, who has verbally committed to play soccer at the University of North Dakota next fall now leads the Raiders with 10 goals this season.
“I’ve always played in the midfield since I’ve played for the Raiders,” said Anderson. “But last week against Pierre I moved to striker because it was the best thing for the team.”
I asked her where this run of top form is coming from and she humbly credited her teammates.
“It starts with our defense and they push forward well. When you’re solid in the back it opens up opportunities for the midfielders and strikers to make runs. Right now, we’re all clicking.”
At 8-0-1 this season the Raiders are on a terror. On Tuesday night it was an offensive barrage from the start. Anderson netted goals in the 25th, 55th, and 70th minute marks. However the attack was limited to Anderson’s strong play. Midfielder Karissa Prpich tallied her seventh goal of the campaign while Shannon Keller put home a penalty for a goal. Lexi Pszanka and striker Katie Klapprodt also each found the back of the net for Stevens.
“We’re not dependent on one player,” said head coach Troy Anderson. “We had five players score goals tonight. It started in the back and the girls had great possession. That’s two-thirds of the battle.”
