First Game: Gering 10, Post 320 7
Second Game: Post 320 4, Gering 2

Jim Brandt didn’t need to say much about the first game with Gering, Neb..

Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t.

“I was thinking of things to say, and if you can’t say anything good, don’t say anything at all.”

That about summed up Post 320’s 10-7 loss in the opener of the doubleheader. The Stars fell behind 9-0 after two innings before rallying late to give the final score a cosmetic boost.

But while the Stars may be many things, one thing they are is resilient. They rebounded to go out on a high note in their final game of the home season, riding the arm of Trace Steckler.

The righty went the complete seven and got some great defense for a 4-2 win.

“A day that looked like it was disastrous turned out to be okay,” Brandt said.

Having not thrown for more than five innings all season, Steckler appeared to gain confidence as the game went on. He gave up a solo home run to Zach Smith in the first inning and fell behind 2-0 after two innings.

From then on he retired Gering in order in all but one of the final five innings. Steckler didn’t walk a batter and used his sinking pitching style to generate 12 ground outs en route to his second win.

“We’ve sent him down to pitch a couple games with the Shooters, and never, not one time all year long did he ever flinch or pout,” Brandt said. “So it couldn’t have happened to a better kid.”

Tanner Feterl was the key cog at the plate for the Stars and got the bats rolling in the fourth still trailing by two.

Feterl smacked a double into the gap in right center with one out, and later scored on Adam Carroll’s bouncing single over the head of Smith on the mound.

“Tanner Feterl, what a game he had,” Brandt said. “He came in and caught and was great in the field. His three hits were all with two strikes on him.”

Carroll also delivered another fortuitous hit in the sixth when the right-handed batter squibbed a single down the first base line.

After a Kyle Gorsuch walk loaded the bases Bryce Mitzel tied the game with a single to center. Jake Fredericksen was hit by a pitch to bring the go-ahead run in, and Corey Weidmann’s sacrifice fly gave the Stars a two-run cushion.

Post 320 (22-18) will close out the regular season with a trip to North Dakota to play Minot and Mandan on Thursday and Friday.
