Every time the Stevens Raiders appeared to be on the way to another win Tuesday night the Cobblers scrapped and clawed their way back into the game. Twice, the Raiders took the lead and twice Central responded with crucial goals earning a hard fought 2-2 draw at Sioux Park.
Trailing 2-1, Central striker Hunter Mader punched in a 90thminute penalty kick. The penalty occurred when just seconds before stoppage time the Cobblers hit a long ball over the Raider defense and Stevens keeper Tom Schleusener jumped for the ball knocking down Cobbler striker Paul Balderramos, giving Central a penalty. Mader stepped up to the ball and calmly finished into the right corner of the goal.
The Raiders (4-1-3) opened the scoring in the 35th minute when the Central goal keeper left his box and chased Chaney Burns some distance from the goal. Burns turned and struck a perfect cross to Chaz Foss in space. Foss curved it into the top corner for a 1-0 lead.
However, Central would not let their rivals run away with the game. In the 59thminute Balderramos put away his first of two goals on the night.
The Raiders again jumped in front when Foss raced down the right side and fired a shot at the goal. The keeper knocked it away, but Burns slotted home the deflection for the Raiders second goal of the night.
The west sider’sheld the ball in the midfield for much of the final 30 minutes, with each team getting a few opportunities on goal, and just as victory appeared to for sure Central launched a soccer equivalent of a hail mary. The defensive cluster of players were engrossed in confusion and the penalty occurred.
The Raiders had a few last ditch efforts but failed to capitalize.
