RAPID CITY—Sometimes for the ‘beautiful game’ to fully flourish it takes patience. In the case of the Central Cobblers versus Brandon Valley it took 80 plus minutes of patience, but one left footed cracker by the Cobblers Megan Johnson made it all worthwhile.

Down 1-0 to Brandon Valley in the opening game of the 2010 season it appeared Central’s opener was going to be ruined, but just as the clock was about to strike 90 Johnson received a cross from teammate Alex Sterling and squared up a perfect strike from about 15-yards right into the old onion bag.

“Overall, the girls played fantastic. This is kind of a young team and we only have three seniors. They really exceeded my expectations tonight, they played very well.” Said Central coach Jerry Young.

It seemed inevitable that the game was going to end in a scoreless draw and was still nil to nil in the 82nd. Despite dominating possession and creating the most chances Rapid City still had nothing to show for it. The Lynx went on a surprising counter-attack and took what was their only shot in over 60 minutes. It went in, and Amy Steffen was the goal scorer.

Despite the shock goal, the Cobblers bounced back creating several quality chances in the next few minutes. And just when it seemed their time was up, Johnson earned the Central a point.

“We didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for this game tonight, but the girls did a lot of good things. Especially over the top and through the middle. Now we just need to work on our width a little. Brandon Valley had a good defense and it was hard to get through there, but we’re going to capitalize on it in the future.”

Central (0-0-1) takes on Sioux Falls Roosevelt today at 3 p.m..
